Boozhoo, Aniin, Hello!
My name is Desiree. I’m a freelance, mobile makeup artist in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I did my makeup artistry certification roughly five years ago and I absolutely love what I do!
I love to laugh, but I never used to be that way. I have always been super self conscious about my big, loud cackle. It took a long time to master self-confidence in all forms (I still struggle with this) but I think that’s why I love working with people so much. I am constantly reminding my clients what makes them amazing and encouraging them to embrace all parts of themselves.
Born and raised in Winnipeg’s North End by a single mom, my maternal family is from O-Chi-Chak-Ko-Sipi First Nation, Manitoba, and my paternal family comes from Grassy Narrows First Nation, Ontario. One of the first things I tell people is that I am a proud Anishinaabekwe (Anishinaabe woman). It hasn’t always been easy growing up as an Indigenous woman, dealing with racism, discrimination, fighting colonial systems, constantly feeling as though I need to prove myself and my worth. I will say though, that coming from a huge family full of incredible matriarchs has definitely helped pave my way.
Another passion of mine giving back to my community and working with Indigenous youth. I work full-time at the University of Manitoba as the Lead Indigenous Student Recruitment Officer. I travel frequently for my job and have the privilege of visiting many beautiful communities, as well as working with some incredibly smart and talented youth. It’s exhausting having two full time jobs but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I adore my clients and I adore the people I get to meet and help inspire!
You might not believe it, but I was a huge tomboy growing up! I never brushed my hair, I never wore makeup. I loved playing with the boys and getting dirty. Makeup wasn’t a thing until my very late teens right before University, and I feel in love with the creative outlet it gave me, but mostly with the amazing women/men I got to meet and work with.
Thanks for taking the time to read about me and look through my website. I look forward to connecting with you, laughing with you, and most of all: making you feel beautiful!
Going forward, I’ll be doing more sharing, so be sure to checkout my blog.
